From Song of Myself
Have you reckon’d a thousand acres much? have you reckon’d the earth much?
Have you practis’d so long to learn to read?
Have you felt so proud to get at the meaning of poems?
Stop this day and night with me and you shall possess the origin of all poems,
You shall possess the good of the earth and sun, (there are millions of suns left,)
You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from your self.

I first discovered Whitman’s “Song of Myself” as an undergraduate studying English, writing and education nearly two decades ago. His expansive visions of democracy and connectedness, self-reliance and nature, love and learning inspired my thinking then and remain relevant to my work today.
As an educator, I strive to guide students in their journey of learning how to learn, discovering connections among academic spheres, reveling in the wonder of words and numbers, and listening to all sides so that they may become ever-curious, compassionate, creative and critical thinkers capable of finding the tools to help them succeed in learning and life.
A Brief Background
I was originally certified in New York where I worked in alternative and supplementary education as a teacher and education director. There I also facilitated creative writing workshops for youth. Over the years, my work has been published, included at the 2001 National Poetry Therapy Conference in Washington, D.C., and awarded.
Currently, I hold a Washington state language arts certification and have experience teaching students from Kindergarten to adult in public, private and alternative education settings. I hold a Master of Arts in Education from Antioch University, where I also taught as adjunct faculty for 5 years, and a Bachelor of Arts in English/Education (grades 7-12) from Ithaca College. My academic and research interests concern literacy development, interdisciplinary education, cultural and media studies, the history of American schooling, and how the beliefs of teachers and administrators shape practice and influence cultures of curriculum within institutions. I am currently engaged in professional development around mindfulness, meditation, and yogic studies, having completed my 200-hour yoga training in 2018 through Breathe for Change. I am currently enrolled in an online continuing education course around mindfulness and clinical practice.
I see my role as an educator and mentor; my job is to help students develop their academic identity and increase their skills by learning how to learn so that they may become confident, mindful and self-sufficient life-long learners. Creating bridges between student, parents, and the school to facilitate and improve communication is another vital component of my work.
I provide instruction and homework support in reading, writing, and study skills for students in Kindergarten through college. For older students, I provide support in subject-specific areas of literature, composition (creative and expository) & grammar, and social studies/history. I work with students who are diagnosed with ADHD, learning disorders and differences, as well as other clinical disorders.
I am an artist as well and you can see my work over at Perch Papergoods; I can be found at local markets and art festivals during the year.
